Wikis -- the Pros and Cons

Monday, August 20, 2007

Wkipedia has been a student's lifesaver for research works and other documentation projects. Now, maybe all of us have used a Wiki before, but not all have edited or contributed to an article.

The following video shows us how a Wiki works and how it could help us eliminate the use of email system.

But since Wikis can be edited by anyone, the question remains -- Are Wikis (Especially Wikipedia) accurate?

A recent article from maltaStar showed how corporate giants used Wikipedia to somehow manipulate or front their image.

- Microsoft tried to cover up the XBOX 360 failure rate
- Apple edit Microsoft entries, adding more negative comments about its rival
- Bill Gates revenge? Microsoft edits Apple entries, adding more negative comments about its rival
- The Vatican edits Irish Catholic politician Gerry Adams page
- In the 9/11 Wikipedia article, the NRA added that “Iraq was involved in 9/11”
- Exxon Mobil edits spillages and eco-system destruction from oil spillages article
- FBI edits Guantanamo Bay, removing numerous pictures
- Oil company ChevronTexaco removes informative biodiesel article and deletes a paragraph regarding fines against the company
- Scientology removes criticism and negatives article from Scientology page
- Al Jazeera TV station adds that the foundation of Iraq was just as bad as the Holocaust
- Amnesty International removes negative comments
- Dell Computers deletes negative comments on customer services and removes a passage how the company outsources work to third world countries
- MySpace removes paragraph when their website was hacked
- EA Games deletes whole paragraphs of criticism about employment practices and business methods
- Dog breeding association deletes whole paragraphs about fatal attacks by dogs on humans
- US Republican Party changes the "Post-Saddam" section of the Baath Party article to a different account of the war, changing the language from "US-led occupation" to "US-led liberation"
- Fox News removes all controversial topics against the network from the Fox News page
- News of the World deletes a number of criticism against the paper
- Nestle removes negative comments on its business practices from its page
- UN address calls journalist Oriana Fallaci a racist ‘prostitute’
- Portuguese government removes entries about Prime Minister’s scandals
- DieBold, the company that controversially supplied computerised polling stations in the US elections, removes numerous paragraphs with negative comments
- Walmart removes criticism of outsourcing work. The retailer also changes negative paragraphs of underpaid workforce
- Sony removes harmful paragraphs against blu-ray systems
- Someone at Reuters calls Bush “a mass murderer”
- Coca Cola removes negative content about its effects
- British Conservative Party removes negative references of its MPs and deletes paragraph of the party’s old policies
- US University adds the “prestigious” adjective to its page
- Boeing edits from “Boeing is a leading American aircraft and aerospace manufacturer” to “Boeing is the leading American aircraft and aerospace manufacturer”
- MSN Search is “a major competitor to Google”. That’s what MSN added to their page
- BBC changes Blair's drink from coffee to vodka and his workout from the gym to the bedroom. Someone from the BBC also changes Bush’s page, changing the name from ”George Walker Bush” to “George Wan*** Bush”
- Someone from The Guardian edits the Wikipedia page of rival newspaper The Times. Originally in the article it is said that The Times sells more than The Guardian. After the edit, The Guardian sells more.

Amy Winehouse I can go to Rehab with you

Saturday, August 18, 2007

Quantcast

She is currently my uber favorite soul-jazz singer. Of course her single Rehab is just one of the fine songs you can hear from her album "Back to Black."

Her song "B-Boy Baby" is a collaboration with former Sugababes and now a solo performer Mutya Buena.

Sad

Wednesday, August 15, 2007

I was rummaging the wilderness of the web when I stumbled on this website.

I must admit that I almost couldn't sleep the night I saw the pictures. This maybe the saddest thing to happen for a mom.

The pictures are taken by Renee C. Byer, the 2007 Pulitzer Prize winner for Featured Photography.

Monday, August 13, 2007

Fletcher Capstan

The ingenuity of this classic looking fletcher table is amazing.

Now that's what I call expandability!

Milk

Milk is an ultra-modern table designed for the people with an elegant taste.

This is the onlt table in the world wherein you can put your Mac or PC on top of with without revealing the wires.

It is a high gloss lacquer RAL 9016 with a solid MDF table top. The height of the tablecan be adjusted electronically through a button underneath. You can also add a small fish tank!

SawStop table saw

Have you seen SiCKO? Now if the guy who paid 12 grand for his ring finger had a saw stop, that wouldn't happen to him. Why? Because SawStop is the world's safest table saw.

And oh, this one made it to the 4th place: The Safe Bedside Table.

The Safe Bedside Table was designed by http://www.jamesmcadam.co.uk/

Zen Buddism | The Sarcastic Way

Saturday, August 11, 2007

Steve Jobs - you know the guy who invented the iPhone, has this interest on Zen Buddism, so this is my tribute to him. Steve, send me a freegin iPhone.

The 22 Zen Buddism Principles:

  1. Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. Just pretty much leave me the hell alone.
  2. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a broken fan belt and leaky tire.
  3. It's always darkest before dawn. So if you're going to steal your neighbor's newspaper, that's the time to do it.
  4. Don't be irreplaceable. If you can't be replaced, you can't be promoted.
  5. Always remember that you're unique. Just like everyone else.
  6. Never test the depth of the water with both feet.
  7. If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of car payments.
  8. Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.
  9. If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.
  10. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
  11. If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.
  12. If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.
  13. Some days you're the bug; some days you're the windshield.
  14. Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.
  15. The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.
  16. A closed mouth gathers no foot.
  17. Duct tape is like 'The Force'. It has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together.
  18. There are two theories to arguing with women. Neither one works.
  19. Generally speaking, you aren't learning much when your lips are moving.
  20. Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  21. Never miss a good chance to shut up.
  22. Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night. And I mean never.

Credit Card -- So Cute

There is little mystery that happened today. A credit card from Bankard (a YGC) with my mom's name on it was delivered, even without my mom applying for it.

We are suspecting that it is a marketing strategy for Bankard. I guess that credit card is not activated though.

So I did a little researched before I went to my dentist. But I found no info on why Bankard sent my mom a credit card.

Instead, I found this cutie!!!

OMG! Its's so cute! Yeah, I kinda enjoyed researching about credit cards that I found myself webhopping on different credit companies -- including HSBC.

So, come Monday, my mom will go personally to her bank (also a YGC) and make a scene there. Haha Kidding.

The Echo (Sigaw)

The Echo (2008)

An ex-con moves into an old apartment building, where he encounters a domestic problem involving a police officer, his wife, and their daughter. When he tries to intervene, however, a mysterious curse entraps him.

I am excited already for the next year’s release of The Echo, the Hollywood remake of 2004 box office hit Sigaw.

The movie is currently in pre-production and will start rolling their cameras on August 13.

They have a nice looking location at New York and of course a good cast!

Jesse Bradford will take the role of Bobby and Amelia Warner will take the role played by Angel Locsin. Iza Calzado will play the role of Anna.

Yam Laranas will direct the movie, together with the best of the filming industry.

The Echo's official website can be found here.

I'm a big fan of Def poetry jams, one of my favorite poet is Rives. He is a master of words, metaphors and uhhmm.. sign languages.

But who really got my attention was Ishle Park, an Asian who's looking for the perfect penis.

Do you think Ishle Park was so horny when she wrote this poem?

Paradise Philippines News

Wednesday, August 08, 2007

Almost a month-and-a-half had already passed after the 600K Bayanihan SEO contest had commenced and it is really bringing up tough competition between the .com, .biz, and .org websites.

As usual, http://www.paradisephilippines.com/ is still on top of the google search results which brought-up about 1,980,000 pages.

Playing on the 2nd and 3rd spot are http://www.paradisephilippines.biz/ and http://paradise-philippiness.com/ respectively.

What is amazing on this SEO contest is the wide range of blog platforms participating. Some Blogspot blogs as well as a lesser known Blogsome platform, appeared at the first first page of the results, while some other Paradise Philippines .com blogs appeared at the second page.

This clearly indicates how content affects a website's ranking.

While browsing the results page, I came across this blog: http://anti-paradisephilippines.blogspot.com/ which gives a different view of our paradise.

The Skittles Touch

Skittles lover? Yes? no? Well, you gotta see the new Skittles ad, "The Skittles Touch." Poor guy he is...

I think he should get a job at Masterfoods instead at his current job. I wonder what would happen if he touch the ground or touch himself. LMAO

Crazy world: In May, 2007, a man was charged for stealing a tractor-trailer containing $250,000 worth of Skittles.

Consider this: Tattooing

I wanna get a tattoo. I've been contemplating about this for the past 2 weeks and at some point, I even had a design in my mind. But why would I want a tattoo? I dunno, maybe I started to appreciate the art of tattooing ever since I saw Angelina Jolie's. I'm a fan of symbolism and obscured meaning, so maybe that is why I liked her tattoo.

Angelina Jolie tattoo

Her tattoo are map coordinates for the birthplaces of her children. Top-Bottom: Cambodia, Ethiopia, Namibia, Vietnam. You can use Wikimapia to view the location.

So there, let's I am really getting a tattoo, maybe tomorrow. The question is, where should I place it? Somewhere people cannot see it or at a spot where it can be seen in full view? All I know is that it should tell something about me.

Tattoos often tell a story and give insight into the personal character and values of the individual. If that individual enjoys strength and values honor it can be readily seen. If the individual values his comrades that too is displayed in tattoos. Hardships in life and past or present loves are also displayed with great pride. Most tattoos tell a story and some tattoos tell tall tales of what that individual wishes they could be, but is not.

Do your tattoos show strength of character or do they proclaim that you are something that you are not? Telling tall tales on tattoos is serious business and can get you into places you wish to be, but can cause serious issues when they find out you are not as tough as you pretend. For those who wish they were something more, they need to prove it to themselves and others prior to wearing a badge of honor.

For example you're a really geek guy; a tough, geek guy, then the Blue Screen of Death perfectly fits your personality:

But the most important factor, for me is the originality of your design. Tattoo is not a tshirt that you can wear whenever you like and just take it off when you get tired of it (or starts to smell). Tattooing is something that should be considered as a permanent "addition" to your body (although laser technology can erase tattoos).

Consider the image below:

Hmmm.. maybe I should consider the Prison Break tattoo. No?
